Look I don’t mean to brag, but I smell great…most times. Actually I can be a very stinky person HAHA! But I know how to smell good! Okay maybe not starting of on the best note lol, but seriously I take a lot of pride in how I smell. So much so that I cried right before a birthday celebration because I had forgotten to spray my perfume before leaving the house. (That was a rough birthday) Anyhow! Each layer of your scent building is important in its own way and it is crucial you take the time to build it properly.
The Shower
A word from a famous blog, or famous to me… by Anna Jube says “Being clean is the single most important key to not smelling bad.” I could not agree more. As a prone to be stinky girl, I just simply can not be a shower 3 times a week girl. Trust me I tried…(Is this a safe place or what…) It just doesn’t work for me. I will get stinky and stinky FAST. So physically cleaning my body frequently is a must. I start the shower with a lightly scented or non-scented body wash. This is NOT the time to pull out the most power packed body gel from bath and body works no shame in their game but not the time. The Dr. Bronners Pure Castile Magic Soap in peppermint or unscented are my personal go to’s. I have tried many unscented body washes and none of them feel like they give me as good of a clean slate on my skin as Dr. Bronner’s. I use this in the very beginning of my shower (if I am not washing my hair which is another blog) After doing the rest of my shower routine I will at the very end of my shower use a scented body wash on my arms, chest, legs. This body wash depends on the occasion, so am I after my shower lounging at home, going out with friends, going on a date, going to work, what scent do I want to be at the base of my scent profile for the day?
We are NOT going to act like feminine hygiene is not apart of the shower routine. I JUST WONT DO IT. Listen. Listen really closely. Your cooch has to get clean. SO YOU MUST CLEAN IT. You do not need to clean inside the hole. Your body does that for you, however you do need to clean the lips and inner portion of the cooch. NOT INSIDE THE GOSH DANG HOLE. To do this I personally use my hands but some people use dedicated wash cloths. I currently use the Dial Gold Antibacterial Bar Soap but some people use the unscented Dr. Bronner’s or the Dove unscented. Whatever works for you and your body.
Body Toner
Now out of all of the steps, I think this is the least needed but if you want to go the extra mile take an astringent, like witch hazel swipe it with a cotton pad in between your butt checks, armpits (before deodorant), underboob, honestly anywhere and I am telling you, you will not deal with sweat build up or smells in that area. make sure to dry properly though!
Body lotion
Now for the fun part! Layering your scents. So whatever base scent you chose in the shower, everything else should build upon or compliment. Some of my favorite base lotions are Sol De Janeiro Cheirosa 71 Body Cream I swear this body creams scent last ALL day. It smells like a oatmeal cookie with a strong rich vanilla undertone. If you want a clean, spa like scent using the Salt and Stone Body Lotion in Bergamot & Hinoki is perfect. It is light and fresh.
Deodorant
Listen. I stand by this decision wholly. I will not be buy any other deodorants beside the Necessaire Deodorant Gel and the Necessaire Deodorant (Soild) that is it case closed…NEXT.
Perfume
I ALMOST did not include this section. I just do not believe that you HAVE to wear perfume to smell good and so much so that I encourage you to grow your routine with out focus on perfumes and WATCH your scent game step up. But since I feel like the riots would start if I did not include this. So hear it is. You need to look up the notes of your fragrances. EACH TIME UNTIL YOU CAN REMEMBER THEM YOURSELF. Let me ask you something. Does pepper traditionally go on cake? Does salt water go in to marshmallow fluff? Does rose go into oatmeal? No. They don’t. So why would you mix them in your scents? Now listen I am not saying the scent notes can not mix at all because they can but if you are wearing a peppermint body wash, a pina colada body scrub, strawberry cheesecake lotion, and a salt air and ocean water perfume. YOU ARE GOING TO SMELL DUMB. Listen they may all smell good separately but that does not mean they will together.
So what SHOULD you do instead? Start thinking of your scents like you would an outfit. You wouldn’t wear neon green heels, a red sequined jacket, and zebra print pants and expect it to magically work together. Your scents deserve the same level of coordination. If your base scent is warm and sweet (vanilla, caramel, tonka, almond, etc.) lean into perfumes that share those cozy dessert-like notes. If your base is fresh and clean (bergamot, citrus, linen, green tea) then stay in that clean girl lane. Floral? Stick with floral families. Woody? Earthy? Same idea.
Now this does not mean every single thing has to smell identical. That would be boring and honestly a little weird. But they should speak the same language. Think of it like cousins instead of strangers. Vanilla and coconut? Best friends. Citrus and bergamot? They go to brunch together. Rose and musk? Elegant, classy, very “I have my life together.” But vanilla and ocean salt with peppermint and strawberry cheesecake lotion? That is a family reunion that should not have been scheduled.
Take a second before you leave the house. Smell your arm. Smell your wrist. Ask yourself one question: Does this smell like a story… or like confusion? Because when your scents are layered correctly people won’t just think you smell good, they’ll think you naturally smell like that. And that, my friends, is the goal.
Some of my current staples are Eilish No. 2 , Replica on a date , Jawhara Sweet Dates .
Wrap up
At the end of the day smelling good is not about buying the most expensive perfume or owning fifty body sprays. It is about being intentional. Clean skin, thoughtful layering, and scents that actually make sense together. When you take the time to build your scent from the shower all the way to the final spritz, you are not just smelling good for ten minutes… you are creating a scent that lasts all day and honestly becomes part of your presence.
And trust me when I say people notice. They may not always say it out loud, but when someone hugs you twice, lingers a little longer, or randomly tells you “you smell amazing”… just know your scent layering strategy is doing exactly what it was meant to do.
Now go forth, be clean, be intentional! TTYL
